Joyful Throws

How to choose a throw blanket for your sofa.

Start with the way you rest, then look at the measurements. A throw chosen for a chair arm may feel different from one you want to pull from your shoulders toward your feet.

1. Measure the space you actually use

Measure the width of your seat cushion and consider where the throw will sit when folded. For a sofa back, decide how much drape you want on each side. For a reading chair, check that a folded throw will not trail on the floor or interfere with the chair’s movement.

A blanket’s flat dimensions tell you its full rectangle. Once it wraps around your body, some of that width is used at the sides. If you want to tuck the edges under your legs, leave extra room.

2. Choose a coverage style

Your routine A useful starting point
A short break in a reading chair Around 50 × 60 in
Longer seated reading or a sofa layer Around 50 × 70 in
More width and length for tucking in Around 59 × 79 in

These are starting points, not fit guarantees. Your height, posture and preferred coverage matter more than a size label. The Fine Rib Fleece is a compact 50 × 60 in option; the Quiet Evening Sherpa offers two longer adult formats.

3. Account for fringe and open stitches

Decorative edges can change how a throw measures and drapes. The Tassel Chenille is listed at 50 × 86.6 in including tassels. That is different from the same length of continuous fabric. Open-knit styles also leave visible spaces between stitches, so choose them for their texture with that construction in mind.

4. Pair the surface with your furniture

Against a smooth sofa, a prominent loop or rib can provide visual contrast. If your upholstery already has a strong pattern, try a solid color or a small-scale texture such as Everyday Cotton Waffle. A floral throw works well when the surrounding cushions are simpler.

For a narrow chair, a shorter or slimmer rectangle is easier to store neatly. For a sofa corner, extra length may be more useful than a very wide piece.

5. Check practical details before you choose

  • Read the exact color-and-size option, not just the photo.
  • Check the listed material; a knit describes a construction, not a fiber.
  • Review the product’s processing and transit estimates if you need it for a particular date.
  • Follow the supplied care label rather than assuming all throws can be machine washed.

A comfortable choice should feel easy to use and easy to place. If you are between two options, compare their flat measurements with a blanket you already enjoy using.
